Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy is a derma-rolling procedure that uses small needles to gently prick the surface of your skin. The needle pricks are just enough to promote the generation of new collagen and skin tissue. The tiny needles intentionally cause minor injuries on the surface of your skin. The outcome of the treatment is a smoother, firmer and toned skin surface.
Can I achieve the same results at home?
According to a 2014 study published in JAMA Dermatology, the risk of harm is high when performed at home. Should you cause too much damage, your skin will be prone to infection and further scaring. University of Utah scientists studied three women who received micro-needling treatments at a spa. Some of the skin-care products used were not individually tested for use with micro-needling devices. The women had allergic reactions that resulted in rashes lasting as long as a year.
What can I expect during micro-needling?
Your dermatologist, Dr Ayanda Motau will roll the micro-needling device over your skin. The process of typically takes less than 30 minutes. Natural collagen growth takes a couple of weeks to months, so your results will show over time. You will experience some visible redness similar to a sunburn before you can see any results.
There is little to no pain involved in the treatment. If you are afraid of needles or have a low threshold for pain, no need to worry. An anaesthetic cream may be applied to your skin to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure. This solution is not a one-time treatment; you will need to have a few treatments depending on what your individual needs are to achieve optimal results.
Stretch marks, acne scarring and pigmentation.
